| Also known as | Fal'Zhardum Din, Dusktown Mine |
|---|---|
| Setting | The Elder Scrolls (Bethesda Game Studios) |
| Location | An immense cavern beneath Skyrim. The eastern cavern lies under Winterhold and the Pale and is entered through the Dwemer ruins of Alftand, Mzinchaleft and Raldbthar, each with a Great Lift to the surface. The western caverns — Greymoor and Arkthzand — run under Haafingar, Hjaalmarch and the Reach. |
| Type | Mixed metal and gem: soul-gem geode veins, corundum, ebony, gold, moonstone, orichalcum, quicksilver and silver; in the second era also a commercial mine with a town built round it |
| Worked | Settled first by the earliest vampire clans and then by the Dwemer, who cut roads, raised buildings and installed the Great Lifts. The Bitterblade Mining Consortium opened its own mine at Dusktown after first venturing down, and had a working settlement there by 2E 582. – Never closed. Dusktown is working in 2E 582; by 4E 201 the western caverns' lifts have been lost or destroyed and the eastern cavern is worked by whoever can reach it. |
| Extent | The Fourth Era cavern carries fourteen corundum veins, six of ebony, three each of gold, orichalcum, quicksilver and silver, two of moonstone, and thirty-four geode veins, with two more geode veins in the Silent City Catacombs. Twenty-three of the thirty-six geode veins yield soul gems; the other thirteen behave as ordinary corundum veins. |

Overview
A cavern the size of a province beneath Skyrim, lit by giant glowing mushrooms and carrying more worked ore than anywhere above it. The Dwemer cut roads and a city through it, a Second Era consortium sank a mine and built a town round the shaft, and in the Fourth Era its geode veins are the only source of soul gems that can be dug out of a wall.
History
Blackreach — Fal'Zhardum Din to the Dwemer, the "Blackest Kingdom Reaches" — is a single natural cavern system running under most of northern Skyrim, lit from below by giant glowing mushrooms and drained by an underground river. The first vampire clans held kingdoms in it before the Dwemer came; one of them, the Nighthollow, ruled the Reach from underneath it. The Dwemer settled the cavern and worked it as an engineering problem. They built Great Lifts to carry men and material to the surface at Alftand, Mzinchaleft and Raldbthar, laid roads guarded by Dwarven Centurions, raised the Silent City at the centre of the eastern cavern, farmed mushrooms in the damp, and set the Tower of Mzark above it all. Some time after 1E 221 a group of the Dwemer city-states connected to the system — Arkngthamz, Bthar-Zel, Mzulft and Raldbthar among them — formed an alliance to oversee the extraction, processing and study of aetherium; the falling-out over that mineral became the Aetherium Wars and brought the Dwarven city-states of Skyrim down. Below ground the Dwemer took in the Snow Elves, blinded them with cavern fungi and put them to work as slaves, and the rebellion that followed became the War of the Crag, fought out in these tunnels for decades until the Dwemer vanished from Tamriel in 1E 700. Mining resumed commercially in the Second Era. By 2E 582 the Bitterblade Mining Consortium had come down into the Greymoor caverns, opened a mine, and built the small town of Dusktown around it, with a consortium office, lodgings, an overseer's office and an inn called The Bottomless Pit. Elle Bitterblade heads the town; her husband Urlvar is overseer at the mine. It is not easy ground. "Blackreach isn't for the faint of heart," Urlvar says. "When we first came down here, we lost people to animal attacks. That's gotten better, but now everyone's spooked about a few missing miners." The disappearances are serious enough that the consortium hires outside investigators, that the town guard captain sent to look into them goes missing himself, and that the overseer bars everyone but working miners from going underground. By the Fourth Era the western caverns' entrances have been lost or destroyed and only the eastern cavern can still be reached, through the three Dwemer ruins and their lifts. In 4E 58 the alchemist Sinderion came down to study crimson nirnroot, which grows nowhere else, set up a field laboratory in an abandoned Dwemer house and was killed there by one of the surviving Dwarven automatons. In 4E 201 the Last Dragonborn was sent down for the Dwemer's Elder Scroll, found Sinderion's remains, and finished the work.
Workings
Ore is cut from veins in the cavern walls with a pickaxe, in the ordinary way of every working in the province, but the concentration and the range are unlike anywhere above ground: corundum, ebony, gold, moonstone, orichalcum, quicksilver and silver all occur in the same cavern. The geode veins are the distinctive ones. Thirty-six are recorded, and twenty-three of them yield empty soul gems rather than ore — grand and black gems appearing only to an experienced digger — while the remaining thirteen give three corundum apiece with a chance of cut gems alongside. Crimson nirnroot grows on the cavern floor in symbiosis with the mushrooms and is found nowhere else in Tamriel. The Second Era workings at Dusktown are a conventional mine with an overseer, a shift of employed miners, sample runs brought back to the consortium office, and a town built at the mouth.
Closure
None recorded. What ends is access: the Great Lifts and other entrances to the Greymoor and Arkthzand caverns are lost or destroyed between the Second Era and the Fourth, and it is not known whether those caverns still exist.
What became of it
Open and worked in both eras on record. In 4E 201 the eastern cavern is held by Falmer, Dwarven automatons, giants, frost trolls and the dragon Vulthuryol, and the veins are cut by whoever can get a lift working and survive the walk.
Canon & adaptations
Skyrim (2011) presents Blackreach as one cavern beneath Winterhold and the Pale, entered from three Dwemer ruins, with no town and no commercial mine. The Elder Scrolls Online's Greymoor chapter (2020) extends the system west under Haafingar, Hjaalmarch and the Reach as the Greymoor and Arkthzand Caverns and adds Dusktown, the Bitterblade Mining Consortium and the missing-miners case, none of which appear in Skyrim's cavern. The two are reconciled in-fiction by the loss of the western entrances before the Fourth Era. Separately, version 1.2.4 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch makes every geode vein yield soul gems; that is a fan fix to an inconsistency in the game's data, not a change in the fiction.

Recorded claims
Each claim is marked with its basis — explicit canon, MineArchive inference, adaptation only, or fandom interpretation — and attached to the source(s) below. Where tellings disagree, both are kept.
- Blackreach, called Fal'Zhardum Din or "Blackest Kingdom Reaches" by the Dwemer, is an immense naturally lit cavern beneath Skyrim, rich in minerals including rare geode veins and crossed by a subterranean river; it was settled by the first vampire clans and later by the Dwemer, who used it as a highway between their cities. (explicit canon) 1,2
- The Fourth Era cavern holds fourteen corundum veins, six of ebony, three each of gold, orichalcum, quicksilver and silver, two of moonstone and thirty-four geode veins, with two further geode veins in the Silent City Catacombs; twenty-three of the thirty-six geode veins are cut for soul gems and the rest yield corundum. (explicit canon) 1
- By 2E 582 the Bitterblade Mining Consortium had opened a mine in the Dusktown Cavern of Blackreach's Greymoor caverns and built the town of Dusktown around it, with a consortium office, an overseer's office, lodgings and an inn; Elle Bitterblade heads the town and her husband Urlvar is the mine's overseer. (explicit canon) 3,4
- Dusktown's miners began disappearing underground. The consortium first lost people to animal attacks when it came down, and later hired outside investigators over the disappearances; the town guard captain sent to look for the missing men went missing in turn, and the overseer closed the workings to everyone but his own shift. (explicit canon) 3,4
- The Dwemer installed Great Lifts to the surface at Alftand, Mzinchaleft and Raldbthar. By 4E 201 the entrances to the Greymoor and Arkthzand caverns had been lost or destroyed and it is not known whether those caverns still exist; only the eastern cavern can be reached, and its lifts need an Attunement Sphere to unlock. (explicit canon) 1,2
- Crimson nirnroot grows only in Blackreach, in symbiosis with the cavern's mushrooms. The alchemist Sinderion came down in 4E 58 to study it, set up a field laboratory in an abandoned Dwemer house and was killed there by a surviving Dwarven automaton. (explicit canon) 1,2
- The Dwemer cut roads and buildings through the cavern, raised the Silent City at its centre, farmed mushrooms in the damp, and enslaved the Snow Elves they had taken in after blinding them with cavern fungi; the revolt that followed became the War of the Crag, fought in these tunnels until the Dwemer vanished in 1E 700.
