Overview

The disused salt mine in Upper Michigan that Cave Johnson bought in 1944 and filled with Aperture Science's test chambers. Its nine shafts, each at least four kilometres deep, hold the company's original laboratories at the bottom and the modern Enrichment Center above, and Portal 2 sends its heroine down through them.

History

Cave Johnson made a fortune with Aperture Fixtures, selling shower curtains to the armed forces, and won the Shower Curtain Salesman of 1943 award. In 1944 he bought a huge salt mine in Upper Michigan, an event recorded on the front page of the local paper that hangs in the old Aperture lobby, and built his company's facilities inside it. Renamed Aperture Science in 1947, the company built its Enrichment Spheres down the mine's nine shafts, starting at the very bottom and working upwards, and from the early 1950s to the late 1980s tested its products there, at first choosing 'only the brightest and best of society' and, from the 1970s, recruiting homeless people. The old shafts were eventually sealed off and the modern Enrichment Center built above them, run in the games' time by the computer GLaDOS.

Workings

Nine vertical shafts, each at least 4,000 metres deep and hundreds of metres wide, much of their volume never used; installations hang above drops into the depths of the mine. Test Shaft 09, codenamed 'Zulu Bunsen', is the last of the nine, with spheres from the 1950s at the bottom and later decades above, pump stations for Aperture's mobility gels and a 4,375-metre lift shaft for employee access.

Closure

Not closed as a whole: the Enrichment Shafts were abandoned and sealed decades before the games, while the facility above them remained in use.

What became of it

The old shafts lie derelict and partly destroyed beneath the working Enrichment Center; in Portal 2 Chell falls into Test Shaft 09 and climbs back up through the decades of laboratories.

Canon & adaptations

Portal (2007) and its promotional material placed Aperture in Cleveland, Ohio; Portal 2 moved the Enrichment Center to Upper Michigan through the 1944 newspaper, and the Portal Wiki records the Cleveland site as an alternative location. The sources call the mine 'disused' or 'abandoned' and say nothing of its salt workings before Aperture.
