Overview
The coal mine of Annesburg, a company town in Red Dead Redemption 2, worked in 1899 under the Jameson Mine and Coal Company. The town has supplied coal along the Lannahechee River for almost a century, its miners are badly paid and often killed, and the mine is guarded against outsiders.
History
Annesburg was founded by German settlers who found rich coal seams in the hills around it, and by 1899 it had been sending coal up and down the Lannahechee River for almost a century; a water tower above the mine gives the date 1869. The mine and almost everything in the town belong to the Jameson Mine and Coal Company of Archibald Jameson. Most of the townspeople work in the mine or live with someone who does, in rows of identical grey wooden huts on the hillside, and the game's own description says working conditions are terrible, pay is poor and many men have died underground. In the story, the gang's loan shark sends Arthur Morgan to collect a debt from a miner, Arthur Londonderry, only for the foreman to tell him the man has died after working to pay it off.
Workings
Drift entrances on the hilltop linked by mine-cart tracks, with the miners striking the coal by pick; inside, chambers and a shaft reached by ladders. Coal comes down through the company's long red works building on stilts, under which the railway and a road pass, and freight trains with hopper cars carry it away.
What became of it
Working in 1899, guarded by armed men who turn hostile to intruders.
Canon & adaptations
The game gives the mine no name of its own; it is the Annesburg mine or the Jameson company's mine. The settlement date of 1869 rests on a water tower, against Rockstar's 'almost a century' of coal; both are given.
