Abandoned mineshaft
Fictional record. This page describes a mine from a fictional setting, not a real place. Information is based on the cited canon, with adaptations and interpretation distinguished where necessary. It is kept separate from the real MineArchive corpus — see Fictional.
| Also known as | Mineshaft, Mines |
|---|---|
| Setting | Minecraft (Mojang Studios (Markus Persson)) |
| Location | Generated underground in any Overworld biome, in every Minecraft world; a surface variant generates in badlands biomes. Not one place but a structure type, placed by the world generator. |
| Type | Generated structure (coal, iron and other ores in the surrounding rock; gold in the badlands variant) |
| Worked | Not dated in the fiction. Added to the game in Beta 1.8, the Adventure Update of September 2011. – Abandoned by definition: the game presents them as old workings, with rails that run out and cobwebs over the spawners. |
| Extent | A central room about ten blocks square with up to four exits in each direction, from which three-block-square corridors, two-storey crossings and diagonal staircases spread; several mineshafts can generate close together and join into larger complexes. |
Overview
Minecraft's own old mine workings: wooden-propped tunnels with broken rail lines, minecarts with chests, cobwebs and cave spider spawners, generated underground in every world, and on the surface in dark oak among the gold of the badlands.
History
Mineshafts came in with Beta 1.8 in September 2011, and in the second pre-release of that version were made less dense and less sprawling, and twice as common to make up for it. The Caves and Cliffs update of 2021 reworked how they meet the new terrain: corridors that cross a cave or canyon now generate a bridge of planks, hung from chains above or carried on log pillars below, and a tunnel that meets an aquifer is sealed off with solid blocks, which can leave a corridor cut off from the rest. The dirt floor of the starting room went in the same update, and the support pillars changed from bark to oak logs and stopped extending into lava.
In the fiction of the world they are simply there: abandoned workings whose builders are never named, with the rails running out, cobwebs gathering in the side passages and cave spiders breeding in them. They are the only structures in which a cave spider spawner is found. The badlands variant, first shown by a Mojang developer in September 2014, is built in dark oak and lies on the surface where the badlands' plentiful gold ore makes it a good place to find gold.
Workings
A starting parlour about ten blocks square with an arched ceiling; corridors three blocks square propped with planks and fences every four blocks, some planks missing and some cobwebbed, with an incomplete rail line on the floor and the occasional minecart holding a chest; dual-floor crossings five blocks square on wooden columns; diagonal staircases cut without stair blocks; and accessory passages where cobwebs hide a cave spider spawner. Mineshafts generate before the ores, so the rock around them carries whatever ore the depth gives.
Closure
Presented as abandoned; no cause is given.
What became of it
Generated in every world; the player's own digging is what reopens one.
Canon & adaptations
The central room never generates in the chunk at the world origin. Generation differs in detail between the Java and Bedrock editions, and the badlands variant exists only on the surface of that biome. The wiki moved from Fandom to minecraft.wiki in 2023, so the two copies of its article are forks of one text rather than independent accounts.
Recorded claims
Each claim is marked with its basis — explicit canon, MineArchive inference, adaptation only, or fandom interpretation — and attached to the source(s) below. Where tellings disagree, both are kept.
- Mineshafts are generated structures found primarily underground in the Overworld: interlinked three-block-square tunnels with incomplete rail lines and oak platforms, and the only structures containing cave spider spawners. (explicit canon) 1,2
- A dark oak variant generates on the surface in badlands biomes, where the biome's plentiful gold ore makes it a good place to find gold. (explicit canon) 1,2
- Mineshafts were made less dense and twice as common in the second pre-release of Beta 1.8, and the 1.18 update stopped their tunnels replacing bedrock and their pillars extending into lava. (explicit canon) 1
- Every mineshaft has a starting parlour about ten blocks square, corridors propped every four blocks, dual-floor crossings, diagonal staircases and cobwebbed side passages, and any chest in one is a minecart with chest on rails. (explicit canon) 1
