Drake's Fang, the Dhalmekian Republic's Mothercrystal, was destroyed in 878; its Dominant, Hugo Kupka, disappeared and was presumed dead in the same attack, and the Republic's resulting military collapse forced it to sue for peace in its war with the Holy Empire of Sanbreque.

Cause

Disputed in-universe. The Dhalmekian Republic's own official record attributes the destruction to the rebel leader Cid the Outlaw and his associates. A contemporary rumour instead held that soldiers of the Kingdom of Waloed -- an orcish nation to the east -- were responsible, and were reportedly sighted at the site at the time.

What happened

In the year 878, Drake's Fang -- the hollow-mountain Mothercrystal that had been the source of the Dhalmekian Republic's wealth and magical power for centuries -- was destroyed. Hugo Kupka, the Dominant of the Eikon Titan who had seized personal control of the site some time before, disappeared in the same attack and was presumed to have died. Responsibility for the attack was never definitively settled: the Republic's own official account named the rebel Cid the Outlaw and unnamed associates as the culprits, a claim later borne out when Cid was separately and explicitly credited with destroying a different nation's Mothercrystal, Drake's Head in Sanbreque, five years earlier in 873 -- establishing a pattern of the same actor targeting Mothercrystals across Valisthea. Contemporaries nonetheless also whispered that soldiers of the Kingdom of Waloed had been sighted at Drake's Fang around the time of its fall, an accusation the Republic's official account does not address. The loss of both the Mothercrystal itself and the Dominant whose power had underwritten the Republic's standing left Dhalmekia unable to sustain its ongoing war against the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, and the Republic moved swiftly to the negotiating table for a cessation of hostilities.

Aftermath

No trial, inquiry or formal reckoning is depicted; responsibility rests on competing public accounts rather than any adjudicated finding. The event's only recorded consequence is political: Dhalmekia's forced withdrawal from its war with Sanbreque.

Canon & adaptations

Two Dhalmekian in-game database entries give the story with different degrees of certainty: the dedicated 'Fall of Drake's Fang' record states plainly that Cid the Outlaw was responsible, while the main 'Drake's Fang' record hedges the same claim as merely 'widely reported' and preserves the rival orc-sighting rumour explicitly. Both are treated here as genuine, unresolved in-canon accounts rather than one being corrected into the other.
