On 22 April 1902 two sinkers were killed at Sherwood Colliery, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, when the balance weight of the drop door at the top of the sinking shaft came loose and fell among them.

Cause
The balance weight controlling the drop door at the top of a sinking shaft became detached and fell down the shaft.
What happened
Edmund Simmons and Albert Newman Woods, both aged 34 and both sinkers, were killed when the balance weight that controlled the drop door at the top of the sinking shaft became detached, fell down the shaft and struck the sinkers below.
