Henwaun Colliery locomotive accident, 1872
On the evening of 4 March 1872 the locomotive that ran between the Blaina ironworks and the Henwaun pit, returning empty and driven fast, jumped the rails near Club Row and turned over. Workers going home, mostly young women, were riding on its tender and buffers; a mother and her thirteen-year-old daughter were killed and several others hurt.

Cause
The engine, driven by David Lewis at a furious pace, left the metals, ran several yards beside them, cut into the bank and fell on its side across the line.
Contributing factors
Riding on the works engines was customary, and the morning and evening runs were crowded with people on the tender and buffers, which made escape harder.
What happened
The daughter was killed outright, her head severed; the mother was badly scalded and died within minutes. Part of the daughter's body was trapped under the sand box, and another engine had to lift the wreck before she could be freed. The bodies were carried home to Club Row on boards. Several men and three locomotives were needed to get the badly damaged engine back on the road.
