Umber

A natural earth pigment coloured by iron and manganese oxides, dug from weathered iron-bearing ground and used raw or burnt as a brown paint colour. It is a clay rather than an ore, and appears only rarely in British mine returns — Water House Mine at Haydon Bridge was credited with lead ore and umber together in 1883, 1888 and 1890.
